Berry and Keenan Announce Salem Council on
Senate Majority Leader Frederick E. Berry (D-Peabody) and Representative John D. Keenan (D-Salem) announced today that the Salem Council on Aging will receive a grant of $38,949 from the state. Salem's grant was calculated by multiplying $5.43 for every citizen over the age of 60. The amount represents a 10% increase over the last fiscal year. The Salem Council on Aging plans to use this money to employ a coordinator of volunteers and an outreach social worker as well as support newsletter mailing costs. "I am happy that despite such tough economic times the legislature was able to uphold our commitment to the Councils on Aging," said Senator Berry. He continued, "The Councils on Aging are an important resource for senior citizens and their funding should reflect that." Representative Keenan added, "The additional outreach
social worker for the COA has already made a major, positive impact
in our community. Support for our senior citizens must be a priority
of ours."
