Rep. John Keenan Receives Backing of Social Workers
SALEM, MA The Massachusetts Chapter of the National Organization
of Social Workers (NASW), has re-endorsed
Representative John Keenan, a Democrat from Salem running for reelection
to the State House of Representatives in
the 7th Essex District. NASW has 150,000 members nationwide and over
8300 in Massachusetts.
John's record as a political activist and organizer
reflects a real commitment to creating a climate of economic
security, the basis for a stronger future for Massachusetts,"
said Sallye Bleiberg of MA PACE, NASW's political action
committee. "He brings to office a valuable perspective on the
well-being of individuals, families, and communities. In
his first term, John successfully lobbied the Governor and his administration
to obtain $110 million dollars for the
Salem courthouse project which will dramatically stimulate the downtown
Salem economy, a project that had been in
the works for years but needed an activist legislator to get it moving.
When John learned of the deplorable conditions
at the Rainbow Terrace housing development, he took the residents
case to the state housing department and did not
relent until repairs including emergency de-leading work
were made and long-term renovations, long pushed off
by the state, were finalized and guaranteed. These are just two examples
of John's commitment to his district in his
first term in office on Beacon Hill.
The Keenan endorsement is part of a grassroots campaign
to elect legislators who acknowledge the importance of
access to affordable health care, the availability of social services
and family supports, and protecting civil rights.
