Representative Keenan offers remarks at
inaugural voyage of new Salem Ferry

SALEM, MA – Representative John Keenan (D-Salem) joined a host of local and state officials for the inaugural voyage of the new Salem Ferry this morning. Following the ship’s departure from Central Wharf in Boston, the ferry docked at approximately 11:30am at the Blaney Street Wharf on Salem’s historic waterfront.

Following the ship’s arrival, a brief press conference featured speeches from a number of dignitaries, including Rep. Keenan, Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll, Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey, Seaport Advisory Council Chairman Rick Armstrong, and Transportation Secretary John Cogliano.

In his speech, Rep. Keenan thanked all of the businesses, public officials, and nonprofits who had partnered together to make the project a success and pointed out that, as a member of the legislature’s Tourism Committee, the ferry represented to him precisely the kind of innovative investment in tourism that Massachusetts needs. “Welcome to the ferry!” Rep. Keenan declared to the assembled crowd.

Rep. Keenan offered the following remarks in reflection after the press conference:

“The Salem Ferry will be an important tool to broaden Salem’s tourism industry. It will enable us to reach a greater array of visitors, who now have an opportunity to experience the charm of one of the oldest and most historic cities in America. It will create a direct link between the waterfronts of Boston and Salem, enabling our city to better tap into the 10.6 million tourists that visit Boston annually.

“Visitors arriving on our shore will be in the heart of historic Salem and are within walking distance of our quaint and unique shops, museums and the picturesque waterfront. In addition, it will provide visitors with hassle free access to Salem without the difficulty of negotiating the highways.

“The Salem Ferry is a cleaner and environmentally friendly alternative to our car clogged and pollution filled motorways. At a time when the citizens of the Commonwealth are burdened with some of the highest gasoline prices in recent memory, the promotion of public transportation options, such as the Salem Ferry, represents a cost effective alternative for those of us seeking to escape the shock at the pump.”
