State Cultural Grants to Benefit Salem Organizations

SALEM, MA – State Representative John Keenan (D-Salem) has announced that grants totaling nearly $77,000 have been awarded to cultural organizations and schools in Salem by the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC). The announcement was made as part of a state-wide funding program by the MCC.

“These grants support a variety of important cultural activities that benefit local residents,” said Representative Keenan, “As a member of the legislature’s Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Cultural Development, I am proud to be an advocate in the State House for support of these vital programs. Our tourism and culture in Salem is critical to our economic well-being and the quality of life of our citizens.”

Local recipients awarded grants include:

  • Organizational Support Program Grants: $4 million state-wide. Organizational Support provides unrestricted operating funds to nearly 400 arts, humanities, and science organizations with track records of excellence, education, and community service. These organizations allow Massachusetts children and adults to experience everything from theatre and music to visual arts and dance, and learn about history and nature, new language and cultures. These three-year grants must be matched one-to-one by the recipient, and range from $2,500 to $62,500.

    • House of the Seven Gables: $2,500. To preserve and interpret the history of Salem through its historic site and collection of artifacts and to make Salem’s history universally accessible to local residents, school children, and national and international visitors.
    • Peabody Essex Museum: $62,500. To increase knowledge and appreciation of outstanding works of art and cultural expression created by people around the world. This mission is supported by research, preservation, education, and publication programs.

  • Local Cultural Council Program (LCC): $2.65 million state-wide. The LCC program is the most extensive cultural funding system of its kind in the nation. This grassroots network provides funding to every Massachusetts city and town through 326 local cultural councils and 2,500 volunteer members. The councils support community-based projects that explore local arts, and history, expand education and accessibility, and celebrate diversity.
    Salem Cultural Council: $11,710.
