State Cultural Grants to Benefit Salem Organizations
SALEM, MA State Representative John Keenan (D-Salem)
has announced that grants totaling nearly $77,000 have been awarded
to cultural organizations and schools in Salem by the Massachusetts
Cultural Council (MCC). The announcement was made as part of a state-wide
funding program by the MCC.
These grants support a variety of important cultural
activities that benefit local residents, said Representative
Keenan, As a member of the legislatures Joint Committee
on Tourism, Arts, and Cultural Development, I am proud to be an advocate
in the State House for support of these vital programs. Our tourism
and culture in Salem is critical to our economic well-being and the
quality of life of our citizens.
Local recipients awarded grants include:

Organizational Support Program Grants: $4 million
state-wide. Organizational Support provides unrestricted operating
funds to nearly 400 arts, humanities, and science organizations with
track records of excellence, education, and community service. These
organizations allow Massachusetts children and adults to experience
everything from theatre and music to visual arts and dance, and learn
about history and nature, new language and cultures. These three-year
grants must be matched one-to-one by the recipient, and range from
$2,500 to $62,500.

House of the Seven Gables: $2,500. To preserve
and interpret the history of Salem through its historic site and
collection of artifacts and to make Salems history universally
accessible to local residents, school children, and national and
international visitors.

Peabody Essex Museum: $62,500. To increase knowledge
and appreciation of outstanding works of art and cultural expression
created by people around the world. This mission is supported
by research, preservation, education, and publication programs.

Local Cultural Council Program (LCC): $2.65 million
state-wide. The LCC program is the most extensive cultural funding
system of its kind in the nation. This grassroots network provides
funding to every Massachusetts city and town through 326 local cultural
councils and 2,500 volunteer members. The councils support community-based
projects that explore local arts, and history, expand education and
accessibility, and celebrate diversity.
Salem Cultural Council: $11,710.
